In February 2009, the State finalized the purchase of the Rakestraw property, placing an additional 55 acres of the original Natural Bridge Battlefield under State protection. The Division of Recreation and Parks is now required to update it’s Unit Management Plan for the Park identifying plans for the preservation, future use, and improvements for the property. The NBHS-CSO will have an important role in providing input to the new Unit Management Plan. The CSO will be providing recommendations in the following areas: (1) Participation in an Archaeological Survey, (2) Development of an Interpretive/Visitors Center and other interpretive opportunities, and (3) Expansion of the reenactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge.
